Nouns and Articles
A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. Countable nouns can be singular or plural. Uncountable nouns normally do not have a plural form.
Use a before a singular countable noun beginning with a consonant sound. Use an before a vowel sound.
Use the when the listener knows which specific person or thing you mean.

I saw a dog. The dog was waiting outside a shop.
